Xellia joins World Antimicrobial Awareness Week on 18-24 November 2020

Xellia Pharmaceuticals (‘Xellia’), a specialty pharmaceutical company that provides important anti-infective treatments against serious and often life-threatening infections, is celebrating World Antimicrobial Awareness Week on November 18-24, 2020.

Xellia is a proud member of the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Industry Alliance. Being a global producer of established and healthcare critical anti-infective therapies, we take our role in antibiotic stewardship and preventing AMR very seriously. We are working to help address the global AMR challenge by manufacturing responsibly, supplying quality anti-infectives consistently, and investing in the development and commercialization of safer, more efficient and easier to use anti-infective products. To strengthen our commitment to AMR and in responsible use of antibiotics, in 2017, Xellia united with over 100 other pharmaceutical, biotech and diagnostic companies and trade associations by signing the Davos Declaration, joining the AMR Industry Alliance in pledging the single goal of fighting AMR for the protection of patients worldwide (The Declaration by the Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology and Diagnostics Industries on Combating Antimicrobial Resistance). In signing the Declaration, Xellia supports antimicrobial stewardship to help slow the rise in AMR and preserve the long-term effectiveness of existing antibiotics.

Dr Aleksandar Danilovski, Chief Scientific Officer, commented:

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most burning threats to human health (so seriously exemplified these days by the COVID-19 pandemic), and we all need to work together to win this globally very important and serious healthcare battle. As Dame Sally Davies so elegantly put it: “COVID-19 is like dropping the lobster into boiling water: you know instantly that you have a problem. AMR, on the other hand, is like gradually heating the water: you don’t know until too late that you have a problem. Right now, we are the lobster in the pot that is slowly heating” The time for action is now!
